Cause You Can’t, You Won’t And You Don’t Stop is a response to the tragic news that Adam ‘MCA’ Yauch of the Beastie Boys passed away last week. As a tribute, invited participants were asked to pick a line from any Beastie Boys lyric and design it on a solid background. I love the directness and calm simplicity of the site, and suddenly the isolated lyrics and rhymes take on a whole new — solemn — meaning.
I chose the first line of Pass The Mic, taken from their 3rd album Check Your Head released in 1992. Check Your Head is by far my favourite Beasties album. Sure, most people will list Paul’s Boutique as ‘the best’, but to me Check Your Head arrived at just the right time in my life. I was in my final years of art high school — living through the golden age of hip hop, and was making enough money from summer jobs to afford to buy my own vinyl in a basement shop in downtown Antwerp which had all the imports, and the album became my soundtrack of the summer of 92. It’s been long lost, but the cassette copy I made from the record was stuck on repeat in my walkman forever.
It only seemed apt to pay tribute to MCA with one of his lyrics.

Eight:48’s eighth issue focuses on the legacy of design and the ability of work to endure in the 21st Century. The issue contains the work of Spin, Julian House, Craig & Karl, Norm and Non Format, amongst many other designers, illustrators and studios.
I was asked to contribute to the question/discussion and chose the Tumblr blog platform as a design which I believe will endure. If I’m right remains to be seen.
The issue is now available through Counter-Print

N.H.I.B.S. stands for Nationaal Hoger Instituut voor Bouwkunst en Stedebouw (National Higher Institute for Building Arts and Urban Design) — which now, after many name changes, is the dept. of Architectural Sciences at the Artesis Hogeschool Antwerp, where he was a professor.
This has done the rounds a few times, but the Blade Runner sketchbook contains some stunning concept work by Syd Mead, Ridley Scott, and others who worked on the film.
I’m particularly intrigued by the graphics, which have dated the most, whilst still retaining that skewed future Anglo-Japanese cyberpunk aesthetic.

New work: Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy poster
I’ve been working on this alternative film poster for Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy on and off for the past two months, after a penny dropped whilst watching the 2012 BAFTAs. Having seen (and absolutely loved) the film late last year I decided, together with the Mystery Box team, to create a special TTSS poster. Initially the plan was to release it quite fast and piggyback on the BAFTA and Academy Awards hype, but plans changed when a new player entered the arena (more on that later), giving me more time fine-tune the design. Aside from capturing key (visual) elements of the film I referenced the type design of the first US edition book cover — partly to star away from the very inappropriate (and overused) use of Agency on the official posters, and to celebrate the unique 70s aesthetics.
The above images show a range of detail shots of the final product and a few initial concepts, work-in-progress, and colour studies.
Speaking of that other player… one crucial logo is still missing on the poster. Once added I’ll follow up with more information. And yes, this poster will most likely go on sale. More soon.
